FLAILING HUMAN

This being was created during a two week Kinetic Sculpture workshop at Penland School of Craft. Guided by the brilliance of Shingo Furukawa, I worked with metals (and all the terrifying accompanying tools!) for one of the first times. The process was challenging and pushed me technically and creatively. ”I’ve never seen a sewing machine in the iron department!” I loved combining very disparate mediums and processes to create this interactive and playful sculpture. At the end-of-session show, people were invited to activate the sculpture; in witnessing others’ delight, I felt this truth: we are all flailing humans.

Thank you to Shingo for his support throughout the process - it would not have been possible without him! I’m also grateful for the Work/ Trade Scholarship oppourtunities at Penland that made this workshop possible for me.
